Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Postsecondary Success

Pressure is mounting for colleges and universities to change – increasing demand for an educated workforce coupled with intensifying financial challenges and wavering public confidence – and a growing number of institutions are responding to that pressure. But they need the support of organizations able to provide networking, resources and guidance to make real and lasting change.

Our work with colleges and universities and the organizations supporting them focuses on transformation – building capacity to dramatically improve student outcomes and eliminate racial and income gaps. This includes having a student-centered mission, using data to make decisions, creating a collaborative environment, setting goals and being accountable for them, and making a commitment to continuous improvement.

We engage directly with a diverse group of colleges and universities and intermediaries to generate tools and resources to support transformation efforts, and support the creation of networks to connect institutions with these resources and with each other to accelerate learning.

Institutional Partnerships

To achieve our vision of a postsecondary system that propels social mobility, and economic development, colleges and universities need to enable more students – especially low-income and first-generation students, students of color, and working adults – to succeed in acquiring affordable, high-value credentials. One key to their success will be leveraging innovations such as digital learning, technology-enabled advising, and redesigned remedial education that are showing promise for improving students' learning outcomes and containing costs. We partner with forward-looking institutions that are deploying these kinds of interventions at scale.
